The next morning we picked up a box breakfast from our camp restaurant and we were off for the Paraa ferry to cross the Nile River again.
If you have seen the movie “African Queen” with Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn, Murchison Falls National Park served as a backdrop for the movie.
In the afternoon we drove to the falls. The water above the falls makes its way through a narrow gorge and drops about 140 feet to the river below.
The next morning we left Murchison Falls Park and started heading towards Kibale National Park. First thing we need to do was get gas. We broke our rule of filling up the car when it is half full. Drew said we were driving on fumes. After we filled the Rav4 with fuel we stopped and had breakfast at the Masindi hotel. Robert Hemingway had stayed at this hotel. Hemingway stayed here one night after he was involved in two plane crashes in and near Murchison Falls National Park. His first plane crashed when they were flying over the falls and the second plane crashed (his rescue plane) during take off. Needless to say he was then driven back to Entebbe and got a plane back to Nairobi.
After breakfast we only drove about one and a half hours to a town called Hoima. We found Mika Eco Resort. We had a great new large air conditioned room with breakfast for $53.60.
The next morning we drove towards Kibale National Park. The country was very green and beautiful up in the mountains.
These children are carrying water jugs from the local well on their bike.
We stayed at Kibale Forest Camp right outside the national park.
Kibale National Park is known for trekking to see the Chimpanzees. The trek usually lasts 2-4 hours. Once you find the Chimpanzees you are allowed to stay and observe them for 1 hour. This is a popular activity with tourists, so you may have to reserve a date and time, because they limit how many people can do the trek. The cost to do the Chimpanzee trek was $150.00 per person. There was also a full day experience that cost $220.00 per person. We did the trek, so we don’t know what the full day experience entails.
